I landed in quito after a unbelievable couple of days, had huge problems with my tickets etc thanks to a very silly person!, finally got there after two days of no sleep and nearly loosing my passport and mind in the airport in amsterdam (solely due to sleep deprivation). Got off the plane and couldn’t understand why there were all these guys going around with huge guns with the place resembling beruit (now I expected things to be different to the west coast of ireland but……) as it turned out the people were attempting to over throw the president so I had landed just as my poor father at home was looking at sky news and reading new flashes saying ‘ecuador state of emergency declared’, poor man! I got caught up between the police and some youths, had to leg it because of the tear gas and then went and had lunch, yes life still goes on in the middle of protests etc. It was the most amazing introduction to south america that I could think of!
