Immediately after the construction works of the House with Chimeras were completed, it became surrounded with numerous legends. One of them says that the architect decided to construct the house after the death of his daughter who drowned in Dnepr. According to this legend, the architect went crazy and decided to decorate the house with the river’s inhabitants.

Pirogovo

To the southwest of Kiev, in the picturesque setting of Pirogovo Village there is an Open-air Museum of Ukrainian Folk Architecture, Rural Life and Folk Art. The museum was founded in the late 1960s and features a unique collection of folk architecture from all regions of Ukraine. In summer and fall the museum hosts special craft festivals. The visitors are also welcome to visit folk crafts shops and a traditional restaurant serving Ukrainian cuisine.

St. Volodymyr's Cathedral

It is the cathedral’s colourful interior that particularly strikes the eye. Mosaics were executed by masters from Venice. Frescoes were the work of three outstanding Russian painters of the day: Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Vrubel, and Mikhail Nesterov. Iconostasis is carved from the white marble brought from Carrara.

The baroque St. Andrew’s Church (Ukrainian: Анрiївська церква) or the Cathedral of St. Andrew was built in Kiev in 1747–1754, to a design by the imperial architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Overlooking the ancient Podil district from a steep hill, this exuberant and colourful structure is one of the city’s best known landmarks.
