over 5 years agoMe and friend were driving from Moab area down to northern Arizona and stopped in at the Gooseneck camp ground mostly because it was free and on the way to our next destination. Neither of us knew anything about the park.
When we arrived, it was rather late and the sun was setting as we started setting up our tent. It was the strangest thing. Here we were going about our business when out of the corner of my eye I noticed this bird sort of swoop up from only a few yards away. Having before been pre-occupied with getting our things set up, it didn’t occur to me to take a look around at where were staying. The bird let me know, that we much closer to “the edge” than I realized.
Just let me say, that as I appoached the canyon I felt both an overwhelming uneasiness and excitement. First of all, the river is very far below the canyon’s edge. A missed step could certainly land you in a very dangerous spot. But the shere breadth, depth, and vastness or the intricate turns are trully something to see.
The next morning, I couldn’t stop taking pictures, and was very pleased with having made the choice to visit the park. It’s not a place that you could spend all day, but taking a drive through the nearby Valley of the Gods, and stopping to see Mexican Hat, make it worth stopping over for awhile.
