I have lived in Melbourne for almost a year.
I love melbourne!! a popular place for young backpackers is St. Kilda beach. you hardly ever hear an Auzzy accent there, the atmosphere is amazing and its a very social kinda place.
the Queen Vic markets are great.Melbourne is truly the shopping capital of Australia

went here last week
wasnt as good as I thought it would be. there are heaps of different look out points so you can see the mountains/3 sisters from all different areas.
also a gondalar and train thing that goes over and down parts of the mountains
