Kenny And Zuke's Real NY Deli

Worth visiting!

Untitled

Wait staff is friendly and patient. Great space for people-watching. Matzo balls in the matzo ball soup were a little glutenous for my preference. The broth was from-scratch delish! Generous portions. Great place to go when you’re tired from browsing the stacks at Powell’s. AWESOME soft drink offering.

Buckingham Fountain

Worth visiting!

I banged my shin on the water pipes while wading in the fountain back in the 1980s. Had that bruise a long time. Don’t try to wade in it now, though. Chicago’s Finest will be on you like a fly on hot butter.

Holocene

Worth visiting!

Good place to actually listen to a band play. I’ve noticed that fewer a-holes talk through a band’s set at Holocene than at Doug Fir. I hope the hipster wannabees don’t invade Holocene too.

Not for the squeamish! This ‘private club’ is a trip! One of the places that is helping keep Portland weird.

Whittaker Ponds

AWESOME

I love this little park! Quiet even though it’s right next to the airport and industry. A great place to start ‘hiking’ and exploring nature with a toddler. Older apple, cherry and black walnut trees toward the southeastern end are great for gleaning, too ;) Maintained by Portland Parks and Rec, but never advertised as far as I know. Has a newish gazebo overlooking the southern pond complete with picnic tables for comfortable picnicking. quiet restful park.

People's Food Co-op

Worth visiting!

The first time I went to this place

Was for the Harvest Festival last Fall during the regular farmers’ market held there every Wednesday. Southeast 21st is closed for this special block party to celebrate local, sustainable and organic foods. My daughter and I had a blast carving pumpkins, watching the pie eating contest and grooving to the awesome musicians that played.

Douglas Fir Lounge

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

I used to love going to see bands play here, but lately the place fills up with hipsters and posers that talk through the entire show. I don’t pay to listen to drunken knuckleheads have conversations, I paid the door to listen to the bands. Don’t go to Doug Fir if you are interested in the music. Apparently Doug Fir has just become another place to be seen.
