I was three and my parents made me live there for 14 years. Got out ASAP, and only visit if I have to, because I love my family and NYC is close by. Otherwise, NJ’s a bust.

over 4 years agoA perfect day, roaming ruins of Tulum with my new husband. In the distance, roiling grey plumes rush towards the shore buffeting the local birds. Thinking it will just be a sprinkle, we stroll along the path, clicking pictures of the flowers and rocks, when we are suddenly engulfed by a whipping, swirling mass of raindrops pinging off our faces…we rush to a plant with large fronds bowing over the road and huddle together, perched on rocks. I hear a rustle to my right. I look cautiously over my shoulder…slowly…slowly. An enormous iguana turns its great head sideways to look me in the eye. His wizened face is implacable as he bobs his head up and down in recognition. We will share this shelter together for the duration of the storm.
