Downtown is quickly growing into the sort of cosmopolitan urban center that’s worth visiting, and there are enough cultural attractions and unique neighborhoods that merely “driving through” would be a mistake, even if I couldn’t recommend flying in from a coast just to visit.

The harbor sights and aquarium are worth a short trip.

There are lots of beautiful beaches in this part of the world, and most are not overrun with boring buildings, plastic souvenirs, and tourists.

The Hemmingway House and Little White House are worth a visit.

I’ll never forget gazing on cloudless skies without planes or contrails after the 9-11 grounding.
