    Beaverdell

    Worth visiting!

    Beaverdell  — 1 year ago

With a population about 350, is set in the mountains near a cluster of 16 small lakes that attract thousands of visitors annually. Located on Highway # 33 north of Rock Creek, the Beaverdell business district includes the oldest continuously operating hotel in British Columbia, a general store, a curio shop, a fish and tackle shop, a trading post, a gas station, post office and several restaurants that serve home-cooked meals. A first aid post and a First Responder unit help to take care of medical emergencies in the area.

n 1897 rich silver ore was discovered on Wallace Mountain and gold was discovered in Carmi, a few kilometers from what is today known as Beaverdell. As a result, three small towns sprung up: Beaverton, Carmi and Rendell. In 1901, Rendell and Beaverton became one, hence Beaverdell.

Of 200 attempts to locate high-grade silver ore on Wallace Mountain, seven were successful. The Highland Mine had produced continuously for over 90 years until recently when the mine was closed and the site sold to the provincial government. At the time of its closure, the mine held the record for being the longest operating in British Columbia and had kept the community alive through many of the province’s hard times. Today’s residents rely on the forest industry for most of their employment. A small, privately owned dimension lumber mill contributes to the economy.

A nice stopping point on the way to Big White and Kelowna, or south to the rest of Boundary Country and points beyond.

Wildlife is abundant and the surrounding lakes are excellent for fishing and boating. Hiking trails and Recreation Sites at Clark Lake, State Lake, Lower Collier Lake and Goat Lookout, developed by the provincial government, can be accessed from Beaverdell. As well, it is a supply and stop-over point along the Trans Canada Trail. Hundreds of tourists a year are discovering Beaverdell as they pedal their mountain bikes along the Historic Kettle Valley Railway Route

(note: I didn’t write this myself, I got it from their website)
