If you would like to hike from village to village, start with the northernmost village and work your way south. The north-south route has a little more downhill than the south-north route. All of the tourists who had done their homework seemed to know this.

Also, make sure you are up for a big hike. I mean, for someone who works out in the morning and spends the day at a desk job, this hike was exhausting. And my girlfriend almost didn’t make it.

Lucca is a beautiful and quiet city in northern Tuscany. I visited in early April and the weather was perfect. An earthen wall about three stories high surrounds the town. The wall is wide enough for a jogging and biking path, and provides many places to sit and drink wine and just look out at a huge meadow surrounding the wall.
