Worth visiting!
Smells like fudge and horse manure
But the gloriousness of the Grand Hotel made up for any odd odors!

To any Hamilton, Montana cowboys out there who are enjoying my 43things entries, please note that I have been happily married to the father of my two children for over 14 years and am not about to abandon them for a Montana cowboy lifestyle. But thank you for the interest, it was flattering.

And I recommend going here! The museums are FREE! (with notable exceptions: The Spy Museum.) There are shops, plenty of international restaurants, clubs, music, politics, etc. And certain areas are just beautiful: Great Falls, Mount Vernon, for example. If you’re doing research, the Library of Congress and the National Archives are right here and are the ultimate resource. The DC school system has a long way to go, so that’s why I now live outside the beltway (but not too far away).

www.dalymansion.org bio follows:
“Marcus Daly (1841-1900) emigrated to America with his impoverished parents. At 15 he was working as a pick-and-shovel man, but his innate ability was recognized by mining experts who sent him to Butte, Montana. Here he progressed so rapidly that he entered a partnership to buy the Alice Silver Mine and the Anaconda Silver Mine. When the silver gave out, he caught the great copper boom and amassed a fortune. A man of wide interests, he developed fruit-growing in Montana and owned and trained some of the finest racehorses. Success did not go to his head. He never lost touch with his former pick-and-shovel friends to whom he gave considerable help.”

Janet was my best girlfriend in high school, then she left for college, got married, and moved across the country to Seattle. I’ve never been and would love to visit and check in with her. Our lives have changed so much, I can only imagine that it would be a little awkward (she became a fundamentalist christian in college and is now a SAHM, which are two things I can’t relate to). But, I treasure my memory of her and would cherish a visit.

It’s a nice enough place. Lots of history, quaint shops in Old Town Alexandria. A few decent restaurants have opened recently! My two latest favorites are Restaurant Eve and Cafe Marianna.
