I was seventeen when I visited Marrakesh; I took a night train down from Tangier, arrived early in the morning, and rather disoriented.
Being blonde, white, and wearing western garb will certainly get you noticed, let me tell you. I’ve never had so many strange men yell out things like “Hey! Julia Roberts! Pretty girl! Look over here!” in my whole life. Next time I go, I’ll think harder about wearing a burka.
Jemaa el Fna square is where most all of the fun occurs, as during the day you can see snake charmers and dancing men who’ll charge you an arm and a leg for a photo if you’ll let them. Also, you can wander around amid the hundreds of local shops, and buy leather goods, burkas, scarves, purses, gold and silver jewelry, basically all kinds of things.
At night the square is lit up with men selling foods from snails to shish kebabs and very good french fries. Crowds of people are everywhere, so watch out for pickpockets, but stop and listen to the music, as it’s quite a treat.
