The Frick Collection

Worth visiting!

A must for art lovers

An amazing collection, informative audio guide (included in the price of admission) and the house is absolutely gorgeous.

Statue Of Liberty National Monument

Worth visiting!

Worth it!

It might seem like a tourist cliche, but the Statue of Liberty is very impressive from up close and offers great views.
The crown has re-opened recently, but I didn’t get to go because it was fully booked three months ahead! So plan your trip in advance.

Murano

(in Italy > Veneto > Venezia)

Worth visiting!

Untitled

I visited Murano with a friend on a bright sunny day and fell in love with this charming island. It felt like a small and cozy neighbourhood, with people greeting each other in the streets and flowers in every window – and most importantly it is QUIET (in Murano I noticed how much noise cars make – because there weren’t any!)

The glass shops are all lovely, some more than others – and also in some of the bigger shops you can actually watch the glass-blowers at work. At the places we saw the entrance was free, thay just had little plates (glass, of course) for people to put money in. It’s amazing to watch these people work and realize that all the beautiful things you see in the shops, from goblets to vases to huge chandeliers, were all made in the very same way.

The glass museum is impressive and interesting, combining historical and contemporary items with scientific explanations about the glass-making process. I recommend going to the museum first and then exploring the shops and workshops – you get a better understanding of what you see.

It’s very easy to get to Murano from Venice by vaporetto (sea-bus) and there are several stops on the island. It’s not very big, so you can’t really get lost. We had lunch at a lovely and not at all expensive restaurant on the main canal with an amazing variety of seafood dishes. All in all, a beautiful place to spend a day.

Firenze

(in Italy > Toscana)

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

A beautiful and charming city where everything is within walking distance of everything else. Florence is very easy to explore and extremely rewarding.

A tip for visitors: buy your museum tickets in advance from one of the ticket offices around the city, it saves you an extremely long wait. My friend and I arrived at Uffizi before the opening time and already there was a huge line outside and we waited about 30 minutes.

Moraine Lake

(in Canada > Alberta)

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

10 minutes from the famous (and vastly overrated, IMO) Lake Louise is this far more beautiful, yet somehow far less well known lake. Its color is unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and the moraine which lends the lake its name is full of ancient fossils, and offers a beautiful view if you climb to its top.

Give Louise a miss and go here instead. It’s worth it.

Bryggen

Worth visiting!

Untitled

How unbelievable is it that people actually lived here, in ever-frozen Norway, without any fire at all? Sure, it was nearly burned to the ground once, but still…
Anyway that’s the story I heard from the locals here – that after a very big fire that nearly destroyed the town (which is built solely out of wood), fire in all its forms was outlawed in Bryggen. Now that I think about it, it makes very little sense…

There was a tiny and very sweet lace shop in one of the houses here that was really beautiful and unique (imagine a tiny wooden cabin bursting with lace, lace on the floor, lace on the walls, lace hanging from the ceiling…)
Lots of pretty craft shops in general. A charming place to visit.

Ireland

(in Europe)

Worth visiting!

How this place changed my life

I felt more at home in Ireland than anywhere else in the world. Maybe I was Irish in a previous life… or maybe it’s just the amazing beauty of the country, the calm atmosphere, the fascinating history and folklore and the warmth of the people. I plan on going back again… and again, and again. There’s no place on earth better than Ireland.

Niagara Falls

(in Canada > Ontario)

Not worth visiting!

So yeah, the falls are pretty...

... but there are so many tourists that visiting is just not fun. The Maid of the Mist boat tours could’ve been awesome, if there weren’t about 20 people per square inch on the boat.
If you want to see great waterfalls the way they were meant to be seen, go to Iguacu in Brazil/Argentina.

I recommend Lesithi plateau, where you’ll find the beautiful Dykti (sp?) cave, in which, according to myth, Zeus was born. Amazing place.
