Seldovia, Alaska

Wilderness

Seldovia is tiny and isolated. It’s accessible mainly by ferry and boat. I’m not sure how big Seldovia is, I think when I was there in the late 80’s it was just over 1000 people.

If you wanted a comfortable base from which to explore Alaskan wilderness in the summer Seldovia would prabably be pretty nice. I remember picking wild huckleberries, buying fresh salmon down on the docks, hiking out into the mountains and just how far o0ut towards the edge of civilization Seldovia is.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and Market, Pier 39

A Forest Gump themed resaurant... how long can it last?

We went here on the recommendation of some random stranger on the street. In restrospect they were joking but they seemed very earnest at the time. We took about two hours to find out we were the butt of the joke, but it wasn’t all bad.

The gee-shucks ambiance went right over our heads, because at that time we’d never seen the movie. The waitress was dumbfounded. I guess most people go to the restaurant because they loved the movie and are eager for a trivial quiz with dinner.

Still, it wasn’t totally horible nor totally outrageous so although I can’t recommend going out of your way to see it, I wouldn’t give it a strong negative review either. If the movie Forest Gump changed your life, then check this out!
