Swamp: Gotta Visit Once

This is one of those things that you want to do once but not a second time. Once is enough, but I could just be remembering the heat and sweat. Overall it is something you should do if you’re in the area and its still open but could be damaged from the hurricane.

Mamou

Worth visiting!

Small Cajun Town

If you’re going to visit Louisiana you should look for the out of the way places like Mamou which has about 3,500 people, i.e., one stop light and a small cafe with great crawfish etoufee. Also, be sure to visit on a Saturday and stop by Fred’s in the morning where they place live music. :) Fred’s is open on Saturdays only from 8 a.m.to 2 p.m. The music starts about 9 a.m., with the radio broadcast over KVPI in Ville Platte starting at 9:15 and continuing until 11:15. The band finishes by about 1:30 p.m. But after it closes you can just go down the road to the next hole in the wall bar. :) You’ll definitely get the real flavor of Louisiana when you visit Mamou! :) Oh yea, before I forget, if you’re visiting during Mardi Gras then this is the place to be! It gives you a more authentic version of Mardi Gras as opposed the commercialzed New Orleans version.

Worth visiting!

Authentic Ghost Town

A great day trip when you’re near Buena Vista or Salida Colorado. The scenary along the way is well worth the time it takes to get there. The buildings are in tact and it’s very peaceful there. If you want to see the insides of a authentic town then you should go to the Fairplay museum before visiting here though.

People, Food, and History Abounds

I grew up here and go back at least once a year to visit. The best times to go is anytime other than summer. I prefer the spring or fall. :)

I still have family and friends in the area and would consider living there again but only part of the year.

Can anyone guess where this picture was taken? If you grew up here you might be able to figure it out. :)

Fairplay

Worth visiting!

Small Towns, Historical Museum

Fairplay is located 21 miles north of Antero Junction on U.S. Hwy 285 at an elevation of 9,896 feet. The scenic portion of Hwy 285, which runs through Pike National Forest between Poncha Springs and Morrison passes through town.

The town was named by gold prospectors who settled it in 1859 when they were driven from nearby Tarryall by miners who had staked more claims than they could work. In “Fair Play” every man would have an equal chance to stake a claim. Visitors aware of the town’s gold-mining roots will find it impossible to miss the remains of the industry that mark the surrounding country side. Anyone interested in the history of the old west and western mining should visit the South Park City Museum.

An Idealic Town

If you want to visit a small town with great people, food, and character then you should take time to see Salida. It has mild weather in the winter and great rafting in the summer. A great place to rejuvenate and explore your artistic interests in you have them because everywhere you look you can be inspired.
