Gold Bluffs Beach, Prarie creek redwoods state park

Untitled

Take Davison Road (it was unmarked in late July 2006) to Fern Canyon. The road is unpaved and you’ll have to cross three small streams (our mini van did just fine) and you’ll need to pay a CA state park day use fee. Take Highway 101 north from Orick (2 miles) or south from Crescent City (30 miles).

Your effort will be well worth it.

The beach is just before the Fern Canyon trailhead.

A local man told me that they filmed part of Jurassic Park there. Not sure if it’s true or not, but is certainly believable.

Redwood National Park, Northern California

Be sure to do the Davison Road drive, unpaved scenic road. It goes to Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon. Take Highway 101 south from Crescent City 30 miles to Davison Road (not marked end of July 2006 when we were there) or travel north 2 miles from Orick.

We bumped our way to the end of this drive (Fern Canyon) and were delighted to find 4 elk peacefully feeding at the start of the trail head. Awesome sight.

Then we backtracked a bit and went to Gold Bluffs Beach. Absolutely beautiful and essentially deserted.
