Mozart is probably buried here. Beethoven definitely is. The moody cemetery scene in “Before Sunrise” was filmed here. And the Jewish part of the cemetery is an experience; it has been left in a state of decay after the Nazis more or less destroyed it.

My wife and I rented a house here for our honeymoon, and actually got married at Ho’okipa Beach nearby.

I lived here for a year after finishing college—best year of my life. It’s a very cool university town that has both a hip-student-y vibe but is also very set in its ways as a provincial town. The saturday market is great; get the Bratfisch, which was always a favorite as we’d stagger around the market, hungover from drinking at the Destille the night before. And find Oma who gives you samples of cheese (if she’s still there).

There’s also enough culture and history to keep you busy, if that’s your thing. For tourists I’d also recommend seeing the “Water Castles” that are in the surrounding countryside.

It’s hard not to love this place. I really miss it.

I lived here from ages 6 to 18. Couldn’t wait to leave. I actually did go back for my 10 year high school reunion, and couldn’t believe how depressing it was.
