Descartes in the Loire Valley

I have friends near Descartes and love visiting them. There is so much history to see within less than an hour drive! Really enjoyed pheasant hunting with a hunt club last year. The food! The wine! And if you’re going to Tours, plan well ahead to experience dinner theatre at Chez Nello. Loved it. Paris is ok too, but too big. It’s only redeeming factor is that I have a niece living there who can show me the sights that most tourists miss. The tourist places are ok but too crowded.

Germany, Europe

Germany

I’ve been there twice and want to go back. Berlin was very interesting, with lots more to see than I had time for. Munich is another place with lots more to see than I’ve had time for. In the Munich area my favorite place is Schlos von Swannstein (not sure that’s the exact spelling). It’s the ‘cinderella’ castle that King Ludwig II (Crazy King Ludwig) built. It’s beautiful and almost as interesting as Ludwig’s story. Nearby is the town of Oberammergau (worth visiting) which you have to go through to get from Schlos von Swannstein to another castle Ludwig II built. Much smaller but the most opulent place I have ever seen in my life. Very worthwhile. Lots of other things to see, too, so plan to spend a couple of weeks in the area if possible.

Poland, Europe

Krakow and area

Spent a short time in Krakow (old part) and loved every minute of it. Can highly recommend the Polonia Hotel and a visit to the Cloth Market with it’s stalls and outdoor restaurants.

I also took a day-trip to the World War II death camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. Highly recommend that everyone sees these places and experiences the feeling of just standing where so many innocents stood during the War. But I will never go there again … I could feel the ghosts there and I was nearly crushed by the sorrow I felt for those poor souls.
