This was by far our favorite stop on our trip to the UK. The people were very friendly, it was not overcrowded with tourists, and there were plenty of adventures outdoors. This isn’t a quick in and out area. Spend a few days, relax and doing some hiking or boating. We look forward to going back again one day. The trick is to find a B&B outside of the bigger towns.

I finally went back to visit (its been about 15 years since my last visit) and I must tell you things have changed. It has really turned into just another big city catering to tourists. It doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. I have really come to enjoy the countryside much more. My suggestion is to bypass the big cities and find the small ones for more of the true culture. Its worth seeing Edinburgh once.

My favorite of all Greece I visited. I would say stay away from the big cities like Chania and Irakleon and get out into the country. My favorites were Sivas/Matala and Falasarna just west of Kissamos. Watch the sunset at Falasarna from a little taverna on the road back into town. Its called Spilios or something similar meaning cave. The owner was the friendliest guy from the whole trip. We got to try his father’s homemade equivalent of Sherry. The family makes their own wine and Raki. A must visit!

This was probably the most breathtaking island although not my favorite by a long shot. After spending two weeks in Rhodes and Crete, Santorini was a shot back into reality with too many American 20-somethings getting drunk and being all around obnoxious on their scooters and 4 wheelers. The good thing was the morning was nice and quiet b/c everyone was still drunk from the night before.

There is a lot of cool history in Rhodes. Many people have claimed it for themselves over the years. Just like any other touristy place, make sure you get outside the port/old city area to see the rest of the island

You have to visit once in your life. Amazing the amount of marble there.

Athens is just another big city, get in and then get out. When visiting islands make sure you get away from the big cities, some of the nicest people and best places to eat are there.

This is just a cool little waterfall with a short trail off the side of the road on the way back to Portland. Really neat little place but gets kinda crowded (at least when I was there).

I visited Dachau when I was about 14. It was overcast and a bit rainy which made the experience that much more morbid. I think it was a great thing to see and understand but it makes you really feel for what those poor people went through. If you have the chance to see for yourself, I definitely recommend.

Definately make this a stop along your trip through the UK. Just a beautiful area to visit!
