Milton Keynes

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: (One of) my hometown(s)!

I spent the most influential years of my life in MK (teenage years), so my perspective is probably a little out of whack with others that live or visit there as adults. Last time I visited my family still in MK was 2002, so I will probably also be quite out of date.

Milton Keynes gets a lot of flack from other Brits, but few have been to it. It isn’t San Francisco, but it is also not the worst place ever (aka Luton).

But if you want to live in a decent sized town near London that has a good amount of diversity considering its size, you could do a LOT worse than Milton Keynes!

For those that want to visit for tourism, it might be not up your alley and the concrete cows are definitely NOT worth visiting Milton Keynes exclusively for! However, those interested in urban planning would get a lot out of visiting the modern designed town.

Also those interested in WW2 history can visit Bletchley Park where some historians believe the war in Europe was actually won.

Singapore

(in Asia)

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Been here twice...

Love Singapore for a short 3-4 day trip when on my way to Australia from Europe! If you love great food, great shopping and hot weather this is the place for you! Shop til you drop (literally) and not just clothes and the usual suspects…also shop for electronics and computer equipment if you like too.

I love visiting the place!

If visiting you must check out: Chinatown, Little India, Botanic Gardens, Orchard Road (go you shopaholics).

Outside of culturally diverse areas Singapore is very clean and feels very safe, although you might get accidently jabbed in the shoulder on the MRT by avid mobile/cell texters or wireless web fanatics!:)

Champaign-Urbana

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: A review from a C-U Townie

I currently live here while my spouse finishes graduate school at UIUC. It is a nice small college town. However, while it might not be Madison or Austin, it is probably more diverse than most would expect for a town of its size.

Like most larger places if you know where to look there is quite a lot to do here (check out the Buzz or Hub free weeklys).

Summer is the best time, but then I dislike [undergrad] students walking/driving in the streets without looking for cars! They also tend not to know how to drive either.

The major complaint I have is that there isn’t a good selection of Indian restaurants (I think it is just Basmati on First Street, am I wrong?).

San Francisco

Worth visiting!

Used to live here

In the dot com boom (and part of the bust) I lived in SF and Redwood City. SF is a great place to visit. Great architecture, great food, fun bay and city walks. The reason I moved away was the cost of living there in a very unstable economy.

If a runner, you can take great jogs between the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges.

Visit Fisherman’s Warf once, but know it can be a tourist trap! Check out North Beach and Chinatown for great dinners and walk up Nob Hill to stretch some of those muscles (or take the tram)!

For great dim sum check out Ton Kiang at 5821 Geary Boulevard between 22nd and 23rd. Unfortunately it is far away from Chinatown!

There is so much more to SF too that I didn’t have time to check out while living there, so pick up good city guide to find a current local.

A review of this place: Honeymoon

Spent my honeymoon here and we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Went at the end of July (not prime season, but perfect for us). We stayed on the Winward (east) side of the island (in Punalu’u) in a rented condo right on the beach. We much preferred being away from the Honolulu and Waikiki crowds although we visited the area a part of 2 days. Check out Kailua Beach for a part tourist, part local experience.
