Mole National Park

(in Ghana)

Worth visiting!

Ghana's Big Game Park

Ghana’s largest national park, Mole (molay) is home to elephants, antelope, warthogs, lions, primates and more. Located in a remote region of Ghana’s northwest, Mole’s 4840 square kilometers offers visitors a variety of no-frills lodging, ranging from campsites to basic private rooms. Though not as popular or developed as the game parks in East Africa, most visitors find it worth the effort to get there.

Farmer's Market

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Old Town Farmer's Market

Alexandria’s farmer’s market is held every Saturday morning from 6 am to 10 am. In addition to fresh produce you can get homemade baked goods and jams, fresh flowers and handcrafted items. It’s in Market Square in front of City Hall. Not a big market, but it’s animated and worth visiting.

King Street Blues

The first time I went to this place

I’ve only had drinks here, but the margaritas were good. It’s an interesting place.

Il Porto

Worth visiting!

Il Porto - Fine Italian Dining

Every time I have a meal here, it’s always wonderful. I’ve probably eaten here eight times. The Fettucine Alfredo and the Ravioli Alla Panna are my favorites.

Had lunch there just last weekend, so now it’s nine times. The lasagne was excellent.

I will keep coming here every time I want a good Italian meal.

Gadsby's Tavern

Worth visiting!

Gadsby's Tavern - Where George Washington Hung Out

Gadsby’s Tavern was a tavern where George Washington frequently had meals when he was in Alexandria. It is now a preserved historical site which you can tour for only a few dollars. It’s very interesting, and you get to handle some of the old objects like a pipe and some hand tools. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re a history buff.

Generous George's

Worth visiting!

Generous George's - a family restaurant

Generous George’s Positive Pasta and Pizza Place is a family restaurant that has been an Alexandria landmark since 1977. They’re known for huge portions and reasonable prices. I had lasagne when I was there, and it was great! I would go there again.

West End

Not worth visiting!

It's Residential

Alexandria’s West End is full of townhouses, condos and highrise apartments. There’s nothing scenic about it. It’s residential and full of strip malls, with an industrial zone thrown in for good measure. While there are a few good restaurants in the West End, there’s nothing else out here worth visiting.

Del Ray

Del Ray is Mostly Residential

Del Ray is primarily a residential neighborhood. There are a few nice places to eat, but it is not an old architecturally historic, trendy-shop filled neighborhood like Old Town. If you come expecting Old Town type ambience, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s a very charming place to live, but it’s not a tourist destination.

Accra

(in Ghana)

Worth visiting!

Wonderful People

West Africa is not for everyone. If you have to have order and fancy accommodations, this is not for you. Ghana is a poor country, and things will not be like they are for you at home. If you like adventure, like to experience a culture vastly different from your own, and you enjoy roughing it a little, you may well like Accra. The people are very friendly. I spent two weeks here and enjoyed every minute.

Lome

(in Togo)

Not worth visiting!

Poor Lome, It Needs Help

A poor city in a poor country. Nothing to see, really. Infrastructure is decaying, what little there is of it. The country is too poor to be set up for tourism. The beaches are nice to look at but are giant outdoor toilets and high crime areas at night. I lived in this country from 1996-98 and visited Lome often during that time. Accra in Ghana is a better place to visit.
