Tashkent

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

Uzbekistan was challenging to me, in every way.

Douglas

Worth visiting!

Untitled

Douglas and Agua Prieta, Mexico are the largest legal border crossing points between the US and Mexico. Well worth the trip, but not your typical Mexican destination.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Worth visiting!

Untitled

I worked as a volunteer docent in at the Civil Rights Institute when it first opened. At least once a week, people would come into the museum who had marched, or remembered the sit ins, or who wanted to tell their story. This is an amazing point of healing for the city and I highly recommend it!

Athens

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Athens will surprise you

It’s almost become cliche (at least among people I talk to, anyway) to talk about how polluted and unpleasant Athens is, but I was there in ‘99 and found it remarkable, even before the Olympic modernization. Start your trip to Greece here, and spend several days. It would be a shame to skip it, but it does feel crowded and polluted if you’ve just come from one of the islands.

Cusco City

Worth visiting!

The first time I went to this place

Cusco is sort of base camp as you make the trek over the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu. The whole experience has been Disney-fied over the past few years, evidently, and you feel it on the trail and in Cusco. But it’s congenial and welcoming, like much of my experience in Peru.
