McGuire's, Pensacola

this is a cool place to visit, but i don’t feel that it’s really an authentic irish pub. SOME of the items on the menu are irish, but other items such as pasta dishes, steaks, & hamburgers dominate the menu. even the shepard’s pie is more like your americanized hamburger pie rather than the traditional irish version. mcguire’s brews some of their own beers, but they aren’t much to write home about. if you like amber beers, their red ale is “ok”. if you like dark beers, try the porter. it’s your best bet. the last time i went, i ordered a white wine & had to send it back. it tasted old & flat. the staff members are pretty helpful & friendly. the food IS pretty good, even if most of it isn’t irish. some dishes are a little pricey, but portions are pretty generous. you’re mostly going for the atmosphere in this place. there is live entertainment on some nights, which features audience participation & sing-a-longs. there are dollars bills adorning the walls throughout the restaurant, a large wrap around bar, & a giftshop. thurs. night ladies drink free well drinks, house wine & draft beer from 10pm until 1am & live entertainment is provided. i’m not certain on this ending at 1am, but i think that is correct.

Capt'n Funs, Pensacola

Untitled

this is a bar/club on pensacola beach. recently remodeled since hurricane ivan, capn’ funs is bigger & better. however, during the summer, it’s still not big enough & is usually jam packed. fortunately, you can escape to the rooftop bar which is less crowded. there, a bands plays cover music & you can look out over the bay. the bottom level is divided into four areas. first, there is a small area with a bar, foosball table & arcade games. second, there is a covered outdoor area with a bar & a pool table. third, there is a covered area with a bar with frozen drink machines & seating. fourth, this area extends into an outdoor, non-covered area with a stage for bands to play (some local & some regional acts appear here) & seating. if you like large crowds, you won’t have a problem with this place. however, if you prefer somewhere quaint & less crowded, i’d steer clear of this place. although, if you go during off season, it isn’t as crowded. they have drink specials on thurs. any well drinks or domestic bottle beer-$3. most of the staff consists of your average college meatheads. it can take a while to get a drink.
