Ukiah, Mendocino County

Must stay: Beside Still Waters B & B

Totally awesome, dog-friendly, luxury get-away cottages. Calm and relaxing and a great way to recharge one’s batteries. Cannot wait to go again…we stayed in the Rose Arbor.

San Francisco, San Francisco Peninsula

Born and raised in the City by the Bay

I was born and raised in San Francisco and it will always be home. Whenever people come to visit I always take them to Ocean Beach, Fort Funston, The Cliff House, Sutro Baths and Golden Gate Park. Most tourists just want to do Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square. I highly recommend getting out and exploring the neighborhoods…Clement Street is fun and so is California. The Marina and Presidio are gorgeous. China town and Little Italy are not to be missed nor is the Mission or Haight Street.

But the beach and the Sunset district are my old stopping grounds and when I am feeling nostalgic that’s where I head. I especially love the Beach Chalet (which sat untouched for most of my youth) and the newer Park Chalet. Great food and great views!

Kaua`i, Hawai'i

Untitled

I have been to Kauai 10 times over the past 20 years. It’s the only island in Hawaii I have visited…mainly because I love it so darn much and am afraid if I stay at a different island, I’d wish I were on Kauai. The whole island is great…I usually stay Kapaa or Wailua Town since they’re so central and cheap. I stayed in Princeville once and it was too country-club snobby for me! I do love Hanelei and the beach just along the road near Hanalei Bay Colony is AWESOME…summer or not it’s always empty. Many days I have spent alone on the sand there! Surely beats the crowds at Poipu or Kee. I like Poipu too…when I am in the mood to people watch. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Ahi Nachos at the Hukilau Lani in the Coconut Marketplace. They have life jazz on Thursday nights which is a bounus and you can wander around the resort and find a hanmock for two strung along the palms near the beach. GREAT star watching at night!
