Stonehenge

Worth visiting!

Sign of the times

I wasn’t able to visit Stonehenge the last time I was in London (tour group and all), but I was there in 1994 when I went on a High School trip.

Back in 1994 you couldn’t go within like 100 feet of the stones. Our bus parked near the giftshop and we walked through a tunnel to get there. It was cool to see such an ancient monument (better than Hadrian’s Wall, I’d say) still standing.

I understand that now vehicles aren’t even allowed near the monument, you have to park and ride their little vehicle to the entrance.

I can’t wait to go back some day.

Brattleboro

Worth visiting!

My hometown

I have lived in Brattleboro for all 29 of my years (save for college in Virginia). I adore my small hometown. 12,000 people call Brattleboro home with another 5,000 or so in the surrounding towns.
Brattleboro is unique. I am sure many people say that about their town/city, but it is true in Brattleboro.
We are a very artistic and academic town. We have a fabulous art museum that recently featured a never before seen Andy Warhol collection. We are home to several branches of colleges, and the School for International Training/World Learning, one of the leading schools in language and teacher training.
We are also an agricultural center. Holstein International, the international cow registry, is centered in Brattleboro. We have many dairy farms in our area. For the last 4 years Brattleboro has been home to The Strolling of the Heifers, an annual cow parade and dairy/ag festival.
Brattleboro sits in the Southeast corner of the great state of Vermont. People here are as inclined to live in, work in, and travel to New Hampshire and Massachusetts, as the rest of Vermont. People move to Brattleboro for the culture, history, job opportunities, and small town charm.

Berlin

(in Germany)
A fairy tale

After college a woman named Carol moved to San Francisco and then onto Berlin, Germany to be an opera singer. A few years later she met another singer named Donald and married him. They had a little boy they named Anthony and raised him in Berlin until Donald died.
Eventually Carol and Tony made their way to Southern Vermont, where he met a girl named Dawn. After many years they married.
Some day they will take their child to Germany and tell them about their father’s childhood.

Vermont Teddy Bear Factory

Worth visiting!

Little kids and big

I have been here twice. My husband and I stopped here on our honeymoon trip. I went a year later with 2 of my little friends (6 and 9, at the time). Both times we made bears (kind of fun, but maybe not as flashy as Build-a-Bear). The tour is funny and informative. Yes, it is commercial, but a fun stop on a tour of Northern Vermont.

Star Island

Worth visiting!

Star Island is my spirit's home

I went to Star as “youth” for 5 summers when I was in High School. Then I was a Pel for a year. In 1999 and 2000 my sister and I went as adults for a week. Star Island is a beautiful place. The conferences are sponsored by the Unitarians and the UCC, but you don’t have to be religious to attend. It is a wonderful, calming experience.

Molokini

Island Paradise

I am watching season 2 of Amazing Race on GSN. The final 3 teams just went to Molokini Island. It is soooo beautiful. I totally want to go there if I can ever get to Hawaii.

Sweet Briar

I went to college in South central Virginia. A lovely part of the state.

Great to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
