Xiamen, Fujian

Clean and serene

Xiamen is touted as one of the cleanest cities in China and I don’t doubt it. It has great weather, friendly locals, endless flowers and fruit and a pleasant sea breeze. Gulangyu Island a few minute ferry ride. The small island is full of architectural sites, gardens and walking trails. It has no motor vehicles and is known in China as “Piano Island”, for having more pianos per capita than anywhere else in China. I didn"t hear any pianos, but the island being quiet and peaceful made up for it.

A very dynamic city with endless sites to see. The only knocks I have are the weather and the ungodly pollution. I could feel it every time I inhaled. Cost of modernization…

Fuzhou, Fujian

Been teaching English here for 8 months

Fuzhou isn’t really a tourist city. Being semi-tropical has kept the winter mild, but I’m terrified of how hot it will get this summer. It’s coastal and surrounded by lush green mountains. The people are really friendly and the food is amazing. Fuzhou is much less westernized than a lot of major cities in China, which can be frustrating but is eye-opening too.
