Battle Abbey includes access to the battlefield of 1066. Make sure you walk around it!

The best place to see the wall – as well as the beautiful scenery – is in Northumberland National Park near Once Brewed. Turn off at the visitor’s centre on B6318 and there will be a parking lot on your right. From there you can follow the wall as you hike up a crag. The view is amazing, the wall is preserved pretty well, and there’s a lovely lake right below the crag. I definitely recommend going here.

It’s a bit hard to get out to the temple, but it’s definitely worth it. Take the train from Victoria to Lingfield (about 50 minutes), then you can either walk to the temple (about an hour) or, if you plan ahead, arrange for a cab to pick you up. Don’t walk in the dark, though – the street’s a bit dangerous.

Llanberis Pass is the most beautiful place on earth.

If you’re scared of heights you will probably not be kissing the Blarney Stone.

This gives you the best view of the city around, from the Castle to Holyrood and Arthur’s Seat to the Firth of Forth. It’s not a hard climb at all, and it was absolutely beautiful.

I ran into this great little treasure by accident. Definitely worth a stop!

If you’re on a time crunch, check the map before you go. The shortest trail (left-most) takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit. The other trails, especially the ones that go along the Salisbury Crags, take much longer. Definitely worth it. If you’re looking for a great view of the city, make sure to go to nearby Calton Hill.

To get into the castle proper, you have to pay, but you can still go up and get a great view of the city from the walls without paying.
