This site, linked to by the NPS site, also seems to lack the sort of information i’m looking for.

I’d heard the name and seen it on local maps and wondered about the geology of the place. This history of the park makes it clear there’s no aluminum, but made it seem even more curious. I’m looking forward to checking it out some time.
