Make friends with your guide. Be unrelentingly friendly. He or she will determine what you see, where you go, to whom you can speak, and what you can take photos of. If they like you, they will spring amazing surprises on the group – you can see great things.

Just saying that you’ve been to Uzbekistan is worth it – and it really is. There are amazing buildings there, incredible old mosques, really interesting politics, beautiful people, a crazy metro system in Tashkent that has to be seen to be believed… I’ll never forget it. Go there. It’s cheap and safe, more or less.
