Mount Timpanogos, Utah County
Beautiful Hike
I’ve never been to the cave, but in the earlier half of the 90’s I used to hike the peak every summer. It’s a beautiful and fairly mild hike with good trails.
What we did every year was camp out at the base of one trail, and take a couple of vehicles to the base of the other main trail to the peak. I can’t remember the names of these trails, but I’m sure the information and maps could be found easily. Anyways, this allowed us to come down a different route than we went up, allowing us to enjoy more of the mountain.
There’s a glacier on Timpanogos that is near the peak, and in a good (or late) snow year the glacier may extend all the way up to its saddle. Other years, you have to climb down a little bit to get to it. But once you do, the best part of the hike can be enjoyed – sliding on your rear down snow in the middle of July.
There is a big valley beneath the peak that is my other favorite part of the hike. You suddenly come up into it and it can be full of wild grasses and flowers beneath the rocky peaks above. I still carry it in my memory as an ideal of heaven.
