Takohachi

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

I LOOOOOOOVE Takohachi. Love it. I usually order the bento or hamburg curry, but the other day I ordered the fried chicken after seeing it on someone else’s plate.

The fried chicken was REALLY GOOD.

House Of Hong

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

House of Hong’s dining room is one of the most diverse places in the city; people of all ethnicities love House of Hong!

I don’t go there anymore, but it’s where my dim sum odyssey began. At first it seemed like there is an endless variety, but after a while, we started to notice that that same shrimp ball is just being fried in 20 different ways. So we started to go to the other dim sum houses in the ID, where there were more Cantonese people and more exotic offerings.

Top Gun Seafood Restaurant

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

Top Gun closed at least four years ago. There’s another one in Factoria (Bellevue… if you go that way).

That was such a great place for Dim Sum.

Starbucks - 1st & Yesler

Not worth visiting!

Xingbakeren shi hen qi guai.

I’m from Seattle, and I speak Italian.

So it’s a mistake to go to Starbucks and look at the menu.

My bus was late today, so I didn’t get a chance to get breakfast. During break, I ran down to Starbucks, and ordered a sausage-egg-and-cheese bagel from the glass case. I also wanted some coffee.

All I wanted was a macchiato. So I got to the front and scanned the menu for macchiato. All I saw was ‘caramel macchiato’ which sounds like an abomination.

So I said, “macchiato…”

The guy at the register was in explain mode. “A caramel macchiato is like a latte with….”

Those eight words are already problematic, but I power through. Eyes on the prize. It’s just a 15 minute break.

“Is there a regular macchiato?”

“A regular macchiato is two shots of espresso with some foam…”

“That’s what I want.”

“Single or doppio?”

“what?”

“One shot of espresso or two?”

“One… I thought you just said that a regular macchiato was two shots.”

“Do you want a double?”

“No. You know, I grew up in Seattle, and I speak Italian, so that menu is really confusing.”

“Oh.”

So then I went back to Chinese class and asked how to say “wierd” as in “strange people.”

Xingbakeren shi hen qi guai. Starbucks people are very strange. “Qi guai” has rising, then falling tone.

Noodle Ranch

Not worth visiting!

good food, felt out of place

I used to eat at noodle ranch a years ago. The food was good, but besides the chef, I felt like I was the only asian person there. Not that I’m afraid of white people, but the plates seemed wrong somehow, the silverware seemed wrong… something didn’t seem right. Also, the giant sculpture of chopsticks sticking up out of the bowl was creepy (it’s very bad luck).

I remember always either getting phad thai or chicken in green curry.

I’m giving it a “not worth visiting” not because I hated it there, but because I’m not going back, probably ever. There are plenty of great thai places all over town.

Washington Academy of Languages

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: I'm going here now

Not bad! Expensive, though; I wouldn’t be able to do it if I wasn’t getting it paid for.

Musashi

Worth visiting!

Musashi is CRACK!

I am so addicted to Musashi it’s not funny. I started going there because it was fresh and cheap; but now I’m addicted to the giant cuts of fish, the magic sushi rice, and the proportions. I’ve gone there so much, I could tell you a Musashi rice ball from any other rice ball blindfolded.

When I go I order the bento, or chirashi sushi, or just say sashimi (order by the dollar amount). Their teriyaki is the best in town, not that anyone would know; everyone is eating sushi!
