Experience the magic of the true west along highway 50 in Nevada. Austin is a great place to stop for lunch. There’s an amazing antique/jewelry store there. Make sure to pause at Cold Station, an oasis with nothing around for 50 miles either way. The barkeeps there are great for a word or two. Lastly, don’t miss the shoe tree.

This byway connects up to Beartooth pass traversing the Montana/Wyoming border. Beartooth was closed all last summer, so I didn’t get to ride it’s 10,000 ft heights. But Chief Jo was a wonderful consolation prize. The drive takes you through gorgeous scenery and an incredible pass with views for miles. Eventually you end up in either Cooke City, MT or Cody, WY which are both great spots to rest for a bit. Enjoy!
over 6 years agoEspecially in the winter. For many years I went there every second weekend in December. Off-season, the town is quiet and reflective. A great place to wander around, write your christmas cards, have a nice meal or two, and take a lot of hot tubs!
