It is a wonderful tourist destination, undeniably because of the breathtaking Mosi Oa Tunya – smoke that thunders, beautiful wildlife & lush landscape.
It is among the most peaceful of African countries today with a lot to offer travellers that seek an authentic southern African experience.
I was born and have lived in Zambia & I would recommend visiting to anyone – it’s an unforgettable experience in nature. Although tourism has increased recently, largely due to the situation in Zimbabwe (in whose shadow Zambia had remained for a long time) which has forced visitors to see the Falls from the Zambian side (just as lovely a view, if not more :), it is still not as ‘commercial’ as it could be & will probably be in years to come…Precisely because of this, Zambia is tops when it comes to safaris in particular. Compare the national game parks in Zambia to ones like Kruger in South Africa for example… a tarred road saturated with private vehicles creating dense traffic jams – animals that are completely desensitized to the sound of a dozen car engines roaring simultaneously with screaming kids poking their heads out of windows as cars follow the poor animals with bonnets practially touching their tails as they meander along lethargically in resignation. Mfuwe, Tongabezi or any of the other lodges in Zambia offer a peaceful environment where the natural surroundings & wildlife have been preserved as much as possible. You can see all you would want to see without overly encroaching on the animals and landscape in the process.
From your hosts, to the guides, to the local village people in the surrounding rural areas, you can expect to be met with hospitality and warm smiles. Often, with ecstatic screams & giggles & exaggerated enthusistic gestures of the young ones in the villages as you pass by. In all their poverty, so genuinely welcoming of & excited by the presence of others. It’s a simultaneously heartwarming & heartbreaking sight.
