Rathmines

Worth visiting!

How this place changed my life

I live here- my first flat in Dublin.

Marlay Park

Worth visiting!

The first time I went to this place

Only been to Marlay Park once- for the Beck and Radiohead concert. Beautiful outdoor venue but it’s ginormous! It’s a bit of a trek to the southside as well- but buses can get you there.

la cave est un resto ou il est possible de chercher un vraiment bon vin. peut-etre, un peu chere mais, l’atmosphere est sympa avec des francophones. :)

Insomnia

Not worth visiting!

depending on your coffee desperation

the coffee here is drinkable but not anything to savor. it’s better than average in dublin, but it’s hard to get a good coffee here. could be because i miss vivace in seattle. insomnia can fill the caffiene hole but it’s nothing to write home about.

Dublin International Airport

Worth visiting!

lost bags, flight delays but not unlike other airports

pros: unless you live or coming from the UK by boat, one of two ways to enter ireland (shannon on the west coast being the other option.) they have some decent shops and duty free- i actually discovered one of my favorite clohting stores in the dublin airport- monsoon. :) also, easy to catch the city bus for 5 quid to get to city centre and they run often.

cons: if you can help it, don’t check your bags. lost bags on about 30% of my flights and it takes forEVER to get your baggage after you’ve landed. and it’s a bit far from town- a 25 minute bus ride or a ~30 Euro cab ride.

Bruxelles

Worth visiting!

three pubs in one

Bruxelles has three different pubs- hard rock downstairs on one side, pop music on the other side. Upstairs has another genre of music, which I didn’t experience but struck me more as a “standard” Irish pub, in a non-standard way- whatever that means. But the take away is you can experience three different types of pubs in one- with very different kinds of people in each. Something to please everyone?

O'Connell Street

Worth visiting!

Not super amazing

Not much to see or do actually on O’Connell but some of the old regal buildings still stand on the wide grand street. Wish I could have seen it with all the old trees, still with bullet holes from the 1916 revolution against the British (among other wars I’m sure) but I understand they were taken down when the put in the damn Spire and apparently tidied up the place.

It’s full of McDonald’s and other fast food crap, a movie theater, a bunch of small convenience store type shops- not very interesting to culturual stuff. But the original post office is there and the main bus office. Those are handy to know about.

Guinness Storehouse

Worth visiting!

best dublin view from a high

i’ve never taken the self guided tour; i get in for free since i work in the digital hub so sometimes i go for lunch with co-workers. i did visit the gravity bar, which is up on the 7th floor (i think?) and has an amazing view of dublin. you can see the jillions of cranes peppering the dublin skyline during the building burst happening now. not sure if it’s worth the entrance fee dough but i ain’t paid, so it’s definitely worth visiting from my perspective.

Hogan's

Worth visiting!

My first Irish Local

This was my first local Irish watering hole- introduced to me my first night in Dublin January 2006 by E. With my temp housing just around the corner, I became a frequent patron of Hogan’s.

It’s a hipster pub and somewhat of a scene. I prefer it on weekdays; weekends are unbearable with body heat, humidity and foul smells that come with packed bars. It’s hard to move downstairs on the weekends- one time took me 10 minutes to just get from one side of the bar to the other, looking for friends.

But I still recommend it for a pint when you’re in city centre during the day or weekday nights.

Bukhara Indian Restaurant

Worth visiting!

Super yum!

Best Indian food I’ve eaten in my life (before or since my visit…)
