Shillong, Meghalaya

Untitled by jasonzcrazy

Romantic and picturesque and blessed with an abundance of nature’s gifts, Shillong is described as the ‘Scotland of the East’ because of its striking similarity with that of the Scottish Highlands and has been attracting native and foreign tourists for decades. The city boasts of many beautiful churches and cathedrals.

The colonial hangover of Shillong is not yet over. People still do not feel emabarrassed to describe their city in terms of Scotland of the east or Glen Eagle of the east. Picinic spots in and around Shillong include Elephant falls in upper Shillong, Spread Eagle falls,Beadon/Bishop falls, Ward Lake, Bara Pani (16 km from Shillong).

There are many opportunities for adventure travel in Shillong. Cave exploration, trekking etc. The possibilities are endless.

This is one of the few hill stations with motorable roads all around. Shillong has no rail lines. There is a small airport at Umroi, around 25 miles (40 km) from Shillong. The tourist towns of Cherrapunjee (around 40 miles, or 70 km) and Umiam lake (around 20 miles, or 35 km) are close to the city.

Lakshadweep, South India

Untitled by jasonzcrazy

Located in the Arabian Sea, it consists of twelve coral atolls, three coral reefs, five banks, and numerous islets that lie between 200–300 km off the coast of Kerala. The total land area of the territory is 32 km². Eleven of the islands are inhabited. The Lakshadweep atolls lie about 200 km offshore from the west coast of India.Bitra is the northernmost atoll and also has the smallest inhabited island in India on it. Minicoy atoll is the southernmost, separated from the rest by the 9º channels.

Biodiversity is relatively quite high in the Lakshadweep atolls. The current record for the Scleractinian corals is 104 species under 40 genera, which in all probability is a lower estimate, since collections were restricted so far only to shallow waters and few islands. Several other groups, however, have been well studied. For example, 603 species of fishes are known from the Lakshadweep reefs.

Noteworthy associated ecosystem is the sea grass bed in the lagoons of several atolls. Minicoy island has a small patch of mangroves at the southern end.

The islanders are seafarers and fishermen. The skipjack Katsuwonus pelamis is the tuna caught in abundance and marketed commercially. Fishing in the lagoons is mainly for sustenance. Tourism is a developing activity but carefully regulated so as not to exceed the carrying capacity of the islands.

Pangong Tso, Ladakh

Untitled by jasonzcrazy

Two thirds of the length of this lake falls in the People’s Republic of China. It is 5 km wide at its broadest point. In winter, the lake freezes completely despite being salt water.

Pangong Tso can be reached in a five-hour drive from Leh, most of it on a rough and dramatic mountain road. The road traverses the third-highest pass in the world, the Changla pass, where army sentries and a small teahouse greet visitors. The spectacular lakeside is open during the tourist season, from May to September. A special permit is required to visit the lake. While an Indian can get his individual permit at Leh, non-Indian nationals need to be in a group of at least four. For security reasons, no boating is allowed.
