Denton, Denton County

"Greenwich Village For Poor People"

That’s how the sandwich maker at Jimmy John’s described Denton to me. It reminds me of Cambridge, MA and Berkeley, CA but on a smaller and broker scale. First thing I noticed was a print shop near UNT that is painted in a black and purple mural all over its outside.

There are some damn good restaurants in this town, especially C’Est La Vie, a Greek/Lebanese place that I discovered last night. Lamb Schawarma dinner for just $7? An entire 16 inch pepperoni pizza for my kids for just $5.99? Wow, okay?

We just moved here at the end of August, we live in Ponder, five miles from Denton. Denton is where sanity is for me. It’s how I get away from cabin fever.

Recycled Books on the square is excellent, so long as you are not in a wheelchair. All of their literature is on a second floor balcony and much of their current non-fiction is in the basement, neither of which has wheelchair access, which cuts me and other wheelchair bound people out of half the damn store. Other than that, it’s pretty good.

Ponder, Denton County

I have cows outside my back door

Ponder is a pretty rural place. The entire school district, K-12 has less than 1000 students in the three schools. There are two restaurants – one is a breakfast and lunch grill, the other is a steak house that cuts your steak to order, that you have to reserve a potato the day before if you want it baked instead of fried, and they also offer Rocky Mountain oysters as a side dish.

It’s quiet, the people are polite, but reserved, and I’m damned glad it’s only five miles from Denton, where there are actually things happening.

Nothing to see here unless you are visiting somebody you know, though.
