Better than you think

Popped out of the Metro @ Madeline station and I was struck nearly blind with Grandness. Mine eyes have seen the glory.

I thought it might be interesting trip, but I was floored. There is no architecture nor palpable joi de vivre like in gay Paree.

Great history

Coming from Toronto, I was surprised to see the downtown area empty out after the workday. It’s practically a ghost town by 6pm, if you don’t count the vagrants and other tourists.

The range of wealth is amazing, from zinc-shacked country po’ to city mansions. Great accents, very relaxed pace. Lots to see and do.

Don't go in late summer

Avoid the height of the hurricane season. Even if you manage to dodge a tropical storm, the weather is just mushy. Rain for a half hour, sun for the other half hour. Continous cycle like that throughout the day.

Still, in my week-long visit (this was about 20yrs ago), I got the sense there was much to see and do and I did luck out with one full sunny day at the beach (ahhh!).

Oh, and watch your wallet.

Not worth visiting!

Where are all the people?

Visited for my honeymoon. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay (honeymoons, with the right pair, are awesome even in a dank cave). But I guess I didn’t really do my research. I thought it was a much larger city with a lot more to see and do.

Even with all the Dick and Liz notoriety, it’s a small (small), kinda sleepy town after all. The old Liz-Dick home is one of the big stops on the city tour. Lots of churches, natch.

The people are pleasant, the few street urchins aren’t overly pesky, and it was there where we had the best fish dinner ever in our lives (followed by a great time at the local “hotspot”).

It was a tough choice to label this “not worth visiting”—it really depends on what you want to do.

Shiny

I mean, it’s interesting, if you can pretend the shopping cart crazies really aren’t there, but if you’re a big-city east coaster not looking to be in moving pictures, this place will give you the heebie-jeebies something fierce.

I hear it’s a nice drive from there up the coast to San Fran, tho.

Nice...

but beautifully dull. Weirdly plasticky, it’s like L.A., but with far less grit and no shopping cart homeless people.

The old country

The thing that kept pecking me in the head every few minutes was the realization that I was standing on ground where some truly world-famous, world-shaking events took place.

Cruisin on up.

I’d like to go for whale watching and to see the Aurora Borealis.

Schush!

I’ve only skiied once in my life, but I’ve got to try that Blackcomb beast.
