Trevi Fountain, Trevi

Just in case it works

OK, I’m a total tourist sometimes, but going to the Trevi and throwing in your coin so you get to go back to Roma has to be done – just in case it works.

It’s a fairly attractive fountain, though within a short walk there are a couple of more attractive ones.

I went there alone and spent about twenty minutes watching people and about another twenty being asked by various small groups would I take their picture while they threw their coins over their shoulder – it was a great way to have a short chat with people.

Go there as much for the people and the tradition as the fountain and you will enjoy it immensely.

Galleria degli Uffizi, Firenze

One of the world's great galleries

Not only is the architecture superb but the collection is superb. If you cannot find at least half a dozen paintings that either stun you or reduce you to tears at the Uffizi then you are lacking a soul and should just stay home.

The one major drawback are the tourist groups shuffling through and standing a foot away from large renaissance pictures that deserve to be viewed from at least several feet away.

Book a ticket, and do so as far in advance as possible unless you are going in the off season or don’t mind a long queue. I was fortunate in that my first visit was with my wheelchair bound Mum – this meant no queues, free entry and I used her wheelchair to just push the tour groups out of the way.

Old Trafford, Trafford

Untitled

Well, not just football in the winter. Seeing my Aussies thrash the English cricket team here is high on my list of events to see.
