over 6 years agoSouthern Africa is intense and interesting… Cape Town, being a more “European” city, is often, I think, given a miss, but I thought it was just lovely and full of history-made-present.
over 6 years ago…lives there. We live in San Francisco, and I used to think I would never leave - I’m a firm believer in big cities for esthetic, ecological, and social reasons. But last time we visited, I saw a kid (girl, I think, but indeterminate), maybe 7 or 8 years old, walking home from the market with milk and eggs, by her(him)self. Would I ever see that in San Francisco? Probably not, not even in the good neighborhoods… things have gotten scary enough that even in big, social cities we insulate ourselves indoors.
