Zeitgeist, Deco Ghetto

Untitled

I was living upstairs on third floor across from David and down the hall from Stacey (circa 1990). A 10×10 room with a queen size loft big enough for a futon. Sink in the corner and the toilet and shower down the corridor. Not bad for $289 a month. The floor of my space was fire engine red. So when the sun was up from 11am to 1pm, it would reflect a great redness throughout my flat. Blinding me and crushing the hangover migrain. The bar downstairs was our livingroom. It was great. There were only about six or seven beer taps and a great selection of bottles. The drugs were good and weed was even better. Everyone was leather clad and had some some sort of two wheeled metal horse. I remember the motorcycle shop next door was just opening. The pool table was in the front as you walked in and the Black Knight Pinball machine was in the back. The patio was sparce with picnic tables (some of which David and myself built by the way) and Whitey was just starting the Hot Links cook out business. Hanz was the owner at the time and would take us up to the Toronado on Haight for some Belgisk ales.

I miss it. The last time I was the there, the pool table had been moved to the back and the place seemed to be more commercialized; less of the so called raw personalities of the late 80’s early 90’s and more of the mundane tourist.

I wish I could remember more of the names of the faces that hung out there then…
