I grew up in Santiago. I have know the city through may ages (my own) and through many regimes. I am biased in saying it is one of the most wonderful cities in the world. Santiago is graceful, funky, playful, in a word, it was my home. My family arrived in Santiago in November of 1973 (so you can imagine what it might have been like). I have seen Chile shrink and then grow explosively. As a child I stuck my fingers in bullet holes in the Palacio Nacional, as a teen I hung out at Apumanque and in Providencia, as an adult I have come to appreciate the Mercado Central, Los Domenicos, Santa Lucia, and the charm of a wonderful city. Chile will alwyas be my home, and Santiago my heart.over 7 years ago
Amazing people. I accompanied my husband on a business trip to Thailand. We were in Bangkok for five days, he was in meetings most of the time, so I set off on my own. In all my travels I have never felt more comfortable as a woman alone. The Thai are respectful and generous spirited people. I particularly reccomend that the visitor to Bangkok go to the Weekend Market (Chatuchak – I need to look up the spelling) – 25 acres of ANYTHINGYOUCANIMAGINE! Need a baby Bengal Tiger? Check aisle 34 in section c. Want a rare herb? Next aisle over in section b. Want to take a break and have some pad thai and a coffee? No problem. The most difficult part of leaving the market is finding your way out. Then there is Patpong… an adventure of a completely different sort. Good food abounds in Thailand, the fruit is phenomenal, the varietiy is staggering. I did try durian… possibly the only part of Thailand that didn’t work for me…over 7 years ago
