Spring Break 2006

My girlfriend has spent the last two years teaching English to Japanese kids in Ise, Japan, so for Spring Break I packed my bags and headed over to visit her. When you tell people you went to Japan, they almost inevitably ask you, “So how did you like Tokyo?” I love grinning and telling them, “I don’t know – we never set foot there!” I flew into Osaka, where Laura picked me up and then we spent the week taking the train to Ise, Kyoto, Takayama, and back to Osaka, watching the Japanese countryside out the window and stopping for a few days in each city to check out the shrines, the shops and the food. It’s a wonderful way to see the country, and (I suspect) much more representative of ‘true’ Japan than a week in Tokyo would be – much the same way as a week in the US spent exclusively in NYC or LA would skew one’s opinions of the country.

Coffee and cobblestones.

Portland is absolutely beautiful. The Old Port district is full of nifty little coffeeshops and cobblestone streets — can’t wait to go back!
