Helping Refugees
My two week trip to Rome was focused on helping Middle Eastern refugees. They often came to Italy without registering, and then moved on to other countries. The Italian government did not offer aid to them if they did not register (can you blame them?), so we gave them food, clothing, and conversation! We spent six hours a day with groups of Middle Eastern men, women, and children. I had the best time making new friends and learning about new cultures. We spent some time in a Kurdish refugee camp. One afternoon, two Mercedes’ pulled up with very important looking men in suits. They questioned me in a room for a long time before I could convince them that we really were aid workers. Besides the work with the refugees, we stayed in Frascati (about 35 minutes outside of Rome by train). The last train left at nine p.m., so we were able to sight see from 3 p.m. until nine. It was great! I loved Frascati – amazing little city. One of my best memories from Rome was renting a scooter for five hours. I decided to wander around for the first four hours and then try to find my way back to the rental shop the last hour. This was my favorite trip ever!
