Stayed here only a little while but the city, adorned with the Gros Horlage and the cathedral are truly beautiful. The flat, watery cider…well, an acquired taste.
Went to an amazing museum by the Hotel Dieu dedicated to Gustave Flaubert – and the medical collections of his father, who was the chief surgeon there. I highly recommend this place.
over 7 years agoA small sliver of the city is devoted to reliving the glories of its non-existant British past. Non-existant because what’s been edited out represents most of the experience, and what’s been “preserved” dates from well after BC entered Canadian confederation. Historically accurate muddy streets, opium parlors, and brothels? No. Double-decker busses? Yes.
It’s tiny, beautiful, and swept by clean winds from the Pacific. The climate is mild and the gardens lush. It’s a wonder it has to pander so.
over 7 years agoSpent several weeks here in the late 80s. I was poor and alone, but the city and its galleries were amazing. Managed to get a reader’s card at the British Library and spent many hours amongst the wonders of the collection. A truly great city in all respects.
