My favorite place to spend a week in China

Don’t get me wrong, Beijing has many things that you will want to see. And all of China is worth visiting for its culture and beauty. But Guangzhou is the place I would most want to go just to spend a week’s vacation. I should say that my idea of a way to spend a vacation is primarily doing nothing, lounging around the pool, reading, etc.

We stayed (along with pretty much every other adoptive family) in the White Swan hotel, which is right on the river and is a beautiful vacation spot. Great swimming pools, including one with a waterfall. The funniest thing was coming down to breakfast and seeing a hundred American families, each of which had a Chinese baby girl.

Great Wall, China

Very touristy near Beijing but worth it

Sure, you’ll have to endure the army of people trying to sell you stuff if you go near Beijing. They start right after you get off the bus and continue until you get back on. Still, it is definitely worth it. Thinking of the antiquity of it, of how those people (many of whom, I’m sure, paid with their lives) constructed that thing using mostly human power, really is breathtaking. Great views from on top, too.

We went to China to adopt our daughter. Visited Beijing, Changsha, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong.
