Very pretty. Lots of westerners around studying, so you can quickly make friends. Like the rest of Guatemala, very cheap.

It’s a shame Portugal doesn’t make more effort to preserve and plan for the future in this area (something Spain does a lot better). I remember coming here when I was little and it was still crowded, but had considerably fewer ugly tourist traps.

The entire Alentejo coast has excellent, less crowded beaches. Vila Nova de Milfontes has one of the great beaches.

Admittedly, I stayed near the Macanese border, so all I saw was the border-town shopping district.

Insane.

I’ve never seen so many shops in one place. Western consumer items and brands all over the place (fake? maybe … but definitely cheap).

I got a great hour-long massage for under $4. And I probably got ripped off.

... but don’t expect to speak any portuguese there (save a few restaurants, like Fernando’s).

This city is changing rapidly as it becomes the Las Vegas of Asia (only bigger).
