Oakland Public Library

Worth visiting!

Pictures on the wall

Yes, they were very interesting. I was a little disappointed by the size of the library (it even seems small compared to Berkeley’s main branch). I was expecting a little more from the history room… the main thing of interest there seems to be reference books. But all in all I will reserve judgment. The city of Oakland is a wonderful place, and one takes what one can get in terms of culture from the LIVING, BREATHING aspects of the city (and the history itself, which is well documented, in both anecdote and literature, elsewhere). There is not the need, nor the resources, for Oakland to resort to the form of myopic self reflection that is often practiced by many, much less interesting, cities. The historic photographs were fascinating (and often quaint. A caption below a picture of two boys taken on the shore of Lake Merritt in the 1870’s observed that they must be in their seventies by now)

A tip I have about this place

Boardwalk

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to locals

there’s nothing like walking around in the sun with a large open container of beer! and the roller coaster is great (get over the tourist thing)
