Joy Ride

(in Bolivia > Sucre)

Worth visiting!

Joy Ride Cafe in Sucre, Bolivia

A hip little place close to the central plaza of Sucre, Joy Ride is a combination of cafe, restaurant, bar, travel agency, and general hangout. Coca tea is legal and popular, and all kinds of drinks are available. The food is so-so, there are better restaurants within a block or two, but the atmosphere is great.

Salta

Worth visiting!

Salta

El Tren de las Nubes was not functioning while I was there, but Salta was well worth a visit. The Spanish colonial city is one of the more attractive places in southern South America with a great plaza, some decent shops, restaurants, churches, and museums to visit. It is a good place to stay while visiting the nearby Puna and highland areas. A trip to San Antonio and to the salt pan is a must. Very popular among travellers from Argentina, Chile, and Brasil, it is good to make advance reservations for hotels in Salta, especially during school holidays.

Roma

(in Italy > Lazio)

Worth visiting!

Visit in Winter

We spent 3 weeks in Rome in January-February and had a fantastic time. The weather was not always ideal for outdoor activities, but there are so many indoor things to see and do that it is easy to fill time. Be sure to visit the major sights but also look around for some of the minor ones. There are numerous small churches with fantastic architecture, art, and histories, and there are almost too many restaurants and bars to try. Every neighborhood, or so it seems, has some often overlooked places worth visiting.

Los Cabos

Pure Gringo Tourist Resort

Aside from Cancun and Tijuana, there is probably no less Mexican place in Mexico. US branded hotels and restaurants dominate, and virtually all of the visitors are form the US. Most places accept US dollars for payment – a few will not even accept Mexican pesos!

Time-share touts are everywhere and among the most obnoxious I have encountered anywhere in the world.

A new one is supposedly under construction, but the current airport is a horror with inadequate air conditioning, an almost non-functioning public address system, and prices at the sorry collection of food places higher than those in Times Square.

The landscape and climate are, for me at least, a little more interesting, but in general Los Cabos is the worst of Myrtle Beach lost at the tropical end of the Baja California peninsula.

I do not recommend it as a vacation destination.

National Cathedral

Worth visiting!

The last time I went to this place

We go to concerts here frequently, an impressive space. The cathedral is Episcopalian, not Roman Catholic, though services for various other denominations are held on occasion.
