The Crave Cafe

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: I visited a few times when I was in town...

...and I have to say, I had the best cappuccino each visit. It was beautiful!

The first time I went to this place

I went because one of my favorite local politicos was running for office as a county commissioner and he told everyone to go there. it was awhile ago and i think technically he was encouraging people to trespass, but he was so passionate about the place, and the view, and The Possibilities.

He wasn’t re-elected, which is too bad, because he is so right about this Whiskey Island. It is a delightful little isolated place that is right there just about in the middle of things.

Why I recommend this place to locals

this is one of my favorite gems in cleveland. a lot of cities of cleveland’s size does not have something like this: a place that shows unusual, hard-to-find, classic, and amazing movies run by people who are passionate about film. i am stunned how many clevelanders are oblivious to its existence.

god bless john ewing and everyone else who makes this place possible.

West Side Market

Worth visiting!

a place for the people

i have gone to the west side market since i was a wee lad and remember sitting on my father’s shoulders and going through the place and being amazed by it all. he’d always buy a cup of buttermilk and put some pepper on it—when i was a kid, this seemed like a terrible idea. the canister by that stand is still there, probably about 28 years at this point, and i remember it was as big as i was. this is no longer the case.

the west side market consists of dozens of vendors who sell everything from fruits and vegies to baked goods, (check out the pistachio cake at the stand aptly named CAKE) to every variety of sausage you can imagine to spices and teas. it is one of my favorite places in cleveland. open monday, wednesday, friday, and saturday. saturday is the busiest and most interesting time to visit. all kinds of people.

one of my favorite places is up the stairs off of w. 25th where you can sit and overlook the market… oh, and what a beautiful ceiling.

The last time I went to this place

it was a couple years ago. yes, the town is missing. yes, there isn’t too much to see.

BUT THERE IS AN UNDERGROUND COAL FIRE THAT WILL BURN FOREVER!

(don’t fall in near the cemetery)
