Its definitely not my favorite of the Hawaiian islands, but if you find yourself traveling here you will still be in paradise. The North shore is as calm as warm bathwater in the summer!

Haleakala sunrise, road to Hana

This beautiful hike is just outside of North Bend, Wa. Its at the end of the Middle Fork Rd (unpaved, maintained road that requires a Forest Pass). It is roughly a 10 mile roundtrip hike that is fairly flat but incredibly rewarding.

As our month in SE Asia was nearing an end, we had a night scheduled to attend Thaipusam at the Batu Caves. What an amazingly overwhelming experience. The area surrounding the caves, the nearly 300 steps up, and the caves themselves were full of Hindu devotees taking their “burdens” to the top. Many carry portable alters that are attached by needles through their skin. Many believe they can perform these acts when they are put into a trance. A word of warning—stay clear, as they will plow right over you!!
