Unbelievable. You could stay a year. Many people do. Possibly the one of the weirdest places I’ve been to – possibly one of the big locations of godly battles in the Ramayana – historically the scene of thousands of years of fighting between Muslims and Hindus.

The stories from early Portugese explorers are literally gob-smacking and defy any modern movie maker’s imaginations – hard nut rulers, jewels as big as your head, beautiful damp silk drapes hanging from every pillar and post, deep spooky temples and musical stone pillars.

Lovely spot. Utterly lovely.

At the northern coastal border of Karnataka, Gokarna is a holy town to say the least; many temples and brahmins, highly entertaining banana-throwing festival in March, and a stretch of top quality Indian beaches to boot.

Mexico – lovely – went through Chiapas and other parts (only two weeks) some years back – and then up to Palenque (brilliant – especially the ‘Aguas Azul’ waterfalls) but the best of it was visiting San Cristobal de las casas (sp i think), which was a brilliant place and highly recommended.
